Trompe L'oeil translated from French means "to trick the eye".  It is a painting technique that creates the illusion of three dimensions where there are only two. Many architectural elements like columns, windows, and doors can be painted using the trompe l'oeil technique. A casual glance will trick the observer into believing the element is actually present. The key to the trompe Loeil technique is the use of shadows which create the illusion of depth.
